Dance Triennale Tokyo 2012

YouTube【KYOTO EXPERIMENT 2012
Lia Rodorigues "POROROCA"

Best of the British

Thank you for your help on this, very much appreciated! I hope these won’t be too personal, but if they are just say you don’t want to disclose. Just copy and paste this and write your reply under each question.

What made you want to choose to study over in England?

I thought it will be a pity to miss this chance because my father is British and my situation made it much more easy to study abroad than other Japanese students. And also, if you want to study art in Japan, you have to take really high quality and strict entrance exams to apply to universities. For several reasons, I was not ready for that when I graduated from secondary school.

When/if you go back after you finish your education, do you think you would either stay here or visit?

Apparently that is the biggest question I am facing right now, too. I’m really not sure about that yet. But I would say I’m still going to maintain contact with this country somehow over the rest of my life.

Are you enjoying your experience?

Yes, I am.

Are there many differences in the two cultures? What is new to you compared to Japan?

Fundamentally, I think how they think are the same. That’s because each of us is an island country. If I say insularity as a joke, that explains quite a lot. They are determined and also have a cooperative spirit. But their behaviour is different. British are more vocal compared to the Japanese silent (thinking) culture.

What do you personally think about our culture; such as certain days we celebrate, how we live, etc?

What I’m most strongly feeling about British culture is “satirical spirit” in daily life. Taking an example from people’s attitudes to politics, they make really cynical and frank criticism. And I can imagine that’s reshaping the nation constantly in a great way. I can always remember the famous “Economist” covers every week (my father is a subscriber to that magazine since I was small). Sometimes it makes me laugh and another time they throw us serious questions hidden by irony through illustrations. We don’t have as much strong satire for politics as yours in Japan. We are timid with it and I admire your behaviour.

We have our unusual sayings like “Saving face or losing face” as a term of saying. Do you come across sayings like these and do you fully understand why we use them, etc?

We also have the same kind of saying in Japan, too. I think it must be something to do with social order.

I’m going to say a few of these sayings, I don’t expect you to know them but I’m really interested in what you believe they might mean – no pressure!
“Saved by the bell”?

The bell saved you because they warned you?
“Mind your own beeswax”?

I have no idea.
“Eating humble pie”?

Somebody has been humiliated?
“Dead as a doornail”?

Somebody is pooped?
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”?

I have no idea.
“Throwing the baby out with the bathwater”?
OMG. This sounds so serious!

Lastly, could you tell me your first impressions and thoughts when you first came here?

Thank you for your help, you’ve been very helpful to my project!
It was really confusing for me to decide if the British have manners or not. I’m always impressed by people who say thank you to bus drivers when they are getting off. Keeping the door open for the next people coming. I mean, they are so friendly! On the other hand, I was quite shocked when I saw people throw away their cigarettes when they finished smoking them. I was glad I’m not a smoker when I came here. I can’t do that because I feel so guilty. Almost everyone carries little ashtrays nowadays in Japan. There must still be big differences between the UK and Japan from a cultural point of view. Now I can understand that and also try to adapt.

Berlin

Lytes Carey

The National Quilt Championships, Sandown 2011

Ladies and Gentlemen
Tonight I have an exciting announcement to give you
I was going to post this article over a month ago.. Well, finally I have decided that tonight will be the appropriate moment for us all.

This work is by Mr.Ken Saito, who Julia has been taking contact for a while.
Maybe some of you may notice why I'm so excited tonight.
On the upper right, Mr.Saito has placed our drawing that Julia and I did at an event called 裏CAViTY in
February.http://undydandy.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-koenji.html

The above is another of Mr.Saito's work. I believe it is a self portrait that he has drawn on the bottom.

It's not over yet.

Almost 3weeks has passed since the earthquake had hit the Tohoku area.
It is still scary for me to see the news sometimes.
There was a suggestion about getting me and my brother go to the states for a while, using our spring vacation.
Well, I am still in Tokyo, and am intended to stay here.

It is both scary and sad to feel the awakening sensation slowly drifting away from us, I mean from all of us who have not been evacuated severely.  We have gas, water and light supplied 24/7. We have warm food on our table three times a day,  and transportation system is getting back to its normal schedule here.

The link I am going to post tonight is something I have been saving up for a week or so.
I wanted to write this article when I felt I needed to be reminded how serious a impact this earthquake has brought. This is real, this is no fiction. And that it is not over yet.

The video was taken and posted on Youtube by my friend's father, who is from Fukushima. He had gone back to Fukushima to bring in some supplies from Tokyo.
The first time I saw this video, it really did have an impact. I felt something that I had never felt when I was watching the news. It somehow gave a more real image of what was happening than what the main-stream media had to give me.
I really need to thank my friend and my friend's father for that. I really needed that experience, to feel more related to what is happening to Japan right now.

Below is the message that I received from my friend, and her father.
It says that they want people to view this video with the knowledge that the reactor which has exploded was generating electricity for the people in the Kanto area( Tokyo included), and that the electricity for Fukushima prefecture itself is generated from a different electric company.   Fukushima prefecture is where the exploded reactor is located.

(26)

Hola everyone. Sorry for the blank. An update for now is that I have finally completed my university application. Most of my friends have finished their entrance exams, and I have to say, I am so proud of all of my buds who have worked so hard for this. Excited to say that I have two things I would like to report in my following posts. I'm just going to write down the titles for now; first, "三世代共同作品"(the piece by three generations); second, "Live Harinezumi no Mori".

All that being said, now I would like to move on with my main topic of this post.
In a few hours I will be going to this exhibition, which my friend is doing.

ONE KOENJI

This is the complete picture of what we have accomplished tonight.
It was tiring in a good way. After 3hours of painting, we were just relieved that we were able to finish on time. While we were washing our hands in the bathroom I asked Julia what she thought of the painting. She gave me her grin and said she thought it was good. That's what really counts I guess.

It was such a fantastic night.
Thanks to our parents, the organisers, all the DJs, all the people that were there tonight, and finally but not least to julia, my partener.

indifference

"Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?
I am myself indifferent honest,
but yet I could accuse me of such things
that it were better my mother had not borne me:
I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious;
with more offences at my beck that I have thoughts to put them in,
imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in.
What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven?
We are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us.
Go thy ways to an nunnery."

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Act3, Sc.1
